A 2,000 Year Old Practice for A Very Modern Fertility Journey
There is a 2,000-year-old yoga teaching I wish every woman navigating fertility knew.
It's called Pratipaksha Bhavana.
It's a practice from the Yoga Sutras (2.33) that invites us, when a thought, emotion, or pattern arises that creates suffering, to consciously cultivate a different, more supportive quality. This practice is especially powerful during fertility treatment. You don't just think the opposite. You practice experiencing it.
But first we have to understand something important:
Emotions don't begin as thoughts. They are experienced as sensations in the body.
Your heart rate changes. Your breath shifts. Your muscles tighten. Your stomach responds. Your body is constantly gathering information about what is happening around you and your sense of safety.
Fear shows us where we feel unsafe or vulnerable.
Anger points to a boundary being crossed.
Sadness can signal loss and the need for release or connection.
Joy signals alignment, pleasure or fulfillment.
Emotions give us information. They are our internal guidance system.
Then the mind comes in.
It interprets those sensations, gives them meaning, and creates a story based on our conditioning, environment and perception.
Something is wrong.
What if this doesn't work?
My body is failing me.
This is where Pratipaksha Bhavana offers another possibility.
If fear is taking over, you consciously cultivate steadiness.
If self criticism is taking over, you cultivate compassion.
If you're consumed by uncertainty, you cultivate presence.
You don't just think the opposite.
You practice experiencing it.
But it's difficult to believe you're safe, that you trust yourself or that you are worthy when your body is bracing, your breath is shallow or you and your body is holding tension.
Positive thinking can feel like lip service if the practice has yet to become embodied.
This is why yoga, meditation, and breathwork become so powerful. They give you a way to practice the quality you're cultivating through your body.
You don't just tell yourself, "I am safe."
You give your body an experience of slowing down, breathing softly, dissolving tension in the body and becoming present.
This is the embodiment.
We can't transcend or bypass the body.
This is the integration:
Breath —> Body —> Lived Experience —> Mind.
You give your body a different experience and over time, something begins to change. You can feel the sensation without immediately reacting to it. You can observe the story without becoming the story. You can create space. And from that space, choose how you want to meet the moment.
When we bring these ancient teaching into the modern fertility journey, it becomes less about controlling the outcome and more about cultivating the capacity to meet the experience differently.
Your fertility outcome does not determine your worth.
Over time, you remember that the qualities of love, kindness, compassion and steadiness are not qualities you need to seek out to become. Rather, it is a returning to the innate nature of your being.
And with that return comes peace.
This is what we practice inside the Fertility Yoga Sanctuary.
