The Secret Language of the Body: Learning to Listen Beyond the Surface.
Everyone talks about “listening to your body.”
But what does that actually mean?
What are the signals your body is sending you?
Sometimes they are obvious.
Painful periods.
Digestive issues or IBS.
Migraines and chronic headaches.
Chronic pain that doesn’t seem to resolve with pain medication.
Chronic fatigue.
Or the deeply confusing experience of unexplained infertility when your tests tell you there is nothing “wrong.”
These are some of the many ways our bodies can get our attention. So often, we don’t listen. We push through, numb, distract, silence and override. We try to make the discomfort disappear so we can get on with everything else we have to do.
What happens when, instead of immediately pushing away what we feel, we become curious about it?
What If the Body is Asking for Our Attention?
This is not about believing that every symptom has a hidden emotional meaning. And it’s not about blaming yourself for pain, illness, infertility, or anything else happening in your body.
There are complex biological, genetic, environmental, hormonal, and medical factors involved in our health. Sometimes we don't yet have an explanation for what is happening—and not having an explanation does not mean that you caused it.
Medical care matters.
We need science and everything medicine has to offer.
Alongside medical care, there is another layer of listening available to us. A deeper relationship with our own bodies. You can seek answers from medicine while also becoming curious about your inner experience.
Both can belong in the journey.
The Body Holds More Than the Conscious Mind Can Always Access
Our bodies are constantly receiving and responding to information. We experience the world through our nervous systems. We develop patterns of tension, protection, movement, breath, attention, and response. Some of these patterns are conscious.
Many are not.
There may be things we have learned to override so consistently that we no longer recognize them.
A tightening in the belly, a held breath, a clenched jaw, shoulders that never quite soften, a sense of shutting down, a feeling that says, “no” before the mind has even formed the words. Or perhaps a longing that you have become so accustomed to dismissing that you no longer recognize it as your own.
This is one of the many reasons somatic practices can be so powerful. They give us an opportunity to slow down enough to notice what is already happening within us. Not because we are searching for something wrong.
But as an invitation to listen.
Getting Out of Your Head and Into Your Body
Many of us live primarily from the neck up. We analyze, plan, research, problem solve, anticipate and try to control the outcome. When you're navigating fertility treatments, uncertainty, appointments, test results, medications, timelines, and decisions, it can be especially easy to become consumed by the mind.
Fertility can become something to manage. Another problem to solve or outcome to achieve.
Your body is not a problem to conquer.
There is another way of relating to yourself.
Somatic practices such as yoga, breathwork, meditation, stillness and awareness invite us to move out of constant analysis and into direct experience.
To notice.
To feel.
To become curious.
To attune ourselves to the signals our body is sending.
This is at the heart of Fertility Yoga.
The Secret Language of the Body
I sometimes think of this as learning the Secret Language of the Body.
This is not a language that tells us exactly why something is happening or a formula where every symptom has a corresponding emotional cause. Rather, it is a language of sensation, awareness, intuition, breath, movement, tension, ease, contraction, expansion, and felt experience. It is learning how to listen without immediately needing to fix.
When we become quiet enough—and brave enough—we may begin to notice what has been outside of our conscious awareness. Perhaps an old pattern is still running quietly beneath the surface. A pattern of over giving, of silencing yourself, of putting everyone else’s needs first, of believing you have to be easy, agreeable or perfect. A pattern of waiting for permission or of abadoning your own knowing in order to meet the expectations of those around you.
Awareness doesn't mean that these patterns caused your symptoms. It means that once we become aware of a pattern, we may have more choice about how we relate to it. We can begin to create something new.
The Body Is Wildly Intelligent
Your body is not your enemy. It is not something you have to fight and not something you need to shame into changing.
The body is wildly intelligent.
Learning to listen can change the relationship you have with yourself. You may begin to recognize your boundaries. You may become more comfortable saying what you need. You may discover desires you have pushed aside. You may begin using your voice—not apologetically, but clearly—to signal to the world what is true for you. You may begin taking up more space. Allowing your creativity to move through you and letting yourself be seen.
And perhaps most importantly, you begin creating the internal capacity to support and hold the dreams that matter to you.
To expand your vessel.
To become available to receive.
This Is the Medicine
This occurs not because you’ve forced, fixed, blamed or shamed.
It is experienced with your attention, curosity and presence.
A willingness to turn inward and listen.
This is the deeper journey of Fertility Yoga.
It is not simply about preparing the body for conception. It is about cultivating a relationship with yourself that can support you through uncertainty, change, treatment, possibility, and everything this journey may ask of you. It is where self betrayal can begin to end and self trust can begin to grow. Where you stop abandoning yourself to meet the expectations around you and begin listening deeply to what is true for you.
