Your Emotions Are Your Superpower

Contrary to what many of us have learned, emotions don’t start as thoughts in the brain. They begin in the body as physiological sensations, like increased heart rate, gut sensations, muscle tension, etc., helping us to scan our environment for safety or danger. This information travels up the body to the brain, which interpret these bodily sensations and labels them with an emotion, such as fear, excitement, sadness or joy.

Emotions give us information. They are our internal guidance system. Fear shows us where we feel unsafe or vulnerable. Anger points to a boundary being crossed. Sadness signals loss and the need for release or connection. Joy signals alignment, please or fulfillment.

Learning how to tune into the sensations in our body and decipher the messages that are encoded in these sensations, without getting lost in the narrative, is a practice.

Tools like meditation, yoga and breathwork signal safety in our body. From that place of safety we have the capacity to pause, cultivate awareness and observe without reacting. We can rewrite a new narrative, one that invites us to observe with curosity and embody the virtues of love, kindness and compassion.

Because THIS is who you truly are.
