Competent on the Outside, Untethered Within: The Nervous System Crisis During Fertility Treatments
If you’ve found your way here, you’re probably in the middle of the fertility journey or love someone who is. Either way, this one is for you.
There is a particular kind of woman I work with.
She has built something significant: a career, a company, a life that required extraordinary discipline and intelligence. She is used to solving hard problems. She is used to being competent.
Then she starts fertility treatment, and something shifts.
The protocol is clear. The science is sound. The clinical team is excellent. And yet she finds herself unable to sleep, unable to focus, unable to trust her own body. She is doing everything right and feeling worse than she ever has.
This is not weakness. This is biology.
Chronic stress -- the kind that builds quietly over months of waiting, injecting, monitoring, and hoping -- activates the same threat response as physical danger. Cortisol rises. The nervous system stays locked in high alert. And the part of the brain responsible for self trust, emotional regulation, and the felt sense of safety goes offline.
Your body will always move to protect you in the best way she knows how. But when she is locked in that sympathetic state (aka, stress), it's not because she doesn't want to come back down. And unfortunately, no amount of positive thinking or affirmation resolves this, because this isn't a thinking problem.
I've spent 20+ years at the intersection of somatic medicine, yoga, and clinical nursing practice, and what I have found, consistently, is that when the body feels safe, the mind can begin to settle. Not better information. Not more discipline, but safety experienced in the body.
Felt safety is accessed through breathwork and somatic movement, such as yoga. Nervous system regulation, practiced consistently, serves not as a compliment to fertility treatment, but as a foundation for surviving it with your sense of self intact. Stress is metabolized, rather than compounded.
Your body is not something to manage. It's something to be in relationship with. When that relationship changes, everything shifts.
Doctors handle the protocol.
My work is what happens in the space between appointments, when the results are pending, the body is braced and the mind won't stop running the numbers.
I bring the body back online. The mind back to the present. The spirit back to itself.
The body always keeps the score. She already knows how to regulate.
She just needs to be guided back home.
This is the work I do.
